Choosing the Lightest Mac Laptop

Many dedicated Mac users are looking for the most portable Mac possible and are frustrated that Apple does not have a computer in the "Netbook" category. In many ways, Apple's iPhone is their netbook equivalent but of course it cannot meet all the needs that a compact but fully featured laptop can offer. Years ago, Apple offered the 12 inch G4 laptop which was loved by many travelers as the perfect Mac laptop. They have since not made a laptop that small.

The MacBook air is the closest equivalent. It's incredibly thin and light, but it still has a sizable 13 inch screen which makes it easy to use but not nearly as compact as most netbooks. The main problem is the premium cost which is 5 times the cost of many PC netbooks!

The MacBook is much more affordable and while it has the same 13 inch screen as the MacBook Air, it weights approximately twice as much and is dramatically less portable than a lightweight PC netbook.

Another option is to buy a used Apple MacBook Air from one or two generations ago.

This is possible for as little as $700 or $800 dollars for the first generation. This is of course more expensive than a netbook, but you you are getting a premium machine that originally sold for nearly $2000 and has a larger screen. In general, you will pay a premium for the Apple quality and user experience and this is no exception. It's disappointing that Apple does not have a true entrant in the inexpensive and compact Netbook category, but a used MacBook Air can come surprisingly close.
